Architecture and Construction

Every building you’ve ever walked into was designed, framed, wired, and finished by someone who learned a trade. This pathway is where that starts.

Careers in This Field

Architecture and Construction spans two very different worlds — the design side and the build side — and careers exist across both. Below is a look at where this pathway leads, organized by the education level each role typically requires.

With a High School Diploma + Certification2026-09-15T10:09:15-05:00

Students can enter the construction industry directly after graduation. Entry-level roles are hands-on, in demand, and often the starting point for a skilled trade apprenticeship — one of the most reliable paths to a high-paying career available today.

Construction Laborer

Support skilled tradespeople on active job sites — demolition, material handling, site prep, and cleanup.

Landscaper

Install and maintain exterior grounds, plantings, hardscaping, and drainage systems.

Sales Representative

Manage inbound and outbound shipments, inventory tracking, and logistics coordination.

Hazardous Materials Removal Worker

Safely identify and remove asbestos, lead paint, and other regulated materials from structures.Safely identify and remove asbestos, lead paint, and other regulated materials from structures.

With a Technical Diploma or Registered Apprenticeship2026-09-15T13:49:22-05:00

The skilled trades are the backbone of the construction industry — and they’re in short supply. Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and HVAC technicians are among the most consistently in-demand workers in the country. Registered apprenticeships in these fields typically pay while you learn and lead to wages that rival many four-year degree careers.

Carpenter

Frame walls, install flooring, build cabinetry, and finish interiors in residential and commercial construction.

Construction Electrician

Install and maintain electrical wiring, panels, and fixtures in new and existing structures.

Plumber

Run pipe systems for water supply, drainage, and gas in residential and commercial buildings.

HVAC Installer-Technician

Install, service, and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.

Sheet Metal Worker

Fabricate and install ductwork, structural components, and metal assemblies on construction sites.

Bricklayer

Lay brick, block, and stone to construct walls, facades, chimneys, and other masonry structures.

Ironworker

Erect structural steel, install rebar, and assemble precast components for commercial and industrial buildings.

Roofer and Waterproofer

Install and repair roofing systems, membranes, and waterproofing to protect building envelopes.

Painter and Decorator

Apply interior and exterior finishes to walls, ceilings, and surfaces in residential and commercial spaces.

Tile Setter

Install ceramic, stone, and specialty tile on floors, walls, and countertops.

Concrete Finisher

Pour, level, and finish concrete for slabs, foundations, sidewalks, and structural elements.

Cabinet Maker

Design and build custom cabinetry, millwork, and furniture for residential and commercial interiors.

Heavy Equipment Operator

Operate bulldozers, excavators, cranes, and other heavy machinery on construction sites.

Drafting Design Technician

Produce technical drawings and plans using CAD software under the direction of architects and engineers.

With an Associate Degree2026-09-15T13:52:21-05:00

An associate degree shifts the focus from building with your hands to overseeing how projects come together — cost, compliance, coordination, and design.

Civil Engineering Technician

Support civil engineers on infrastructure projects — surveys, site assessments, and plan preparation.

Surveyor

Measure and map land boundaries, topography, and construction sites to establish accurate reference points.

Interior Designer

Plan and specify interior spaces — layouts, finishes, lighting, and furnishings — for residential and commercial clients.

Cost Estimator

Analyze project plans and specifications to calculate material, labor, and time costs before construction begins.

Project Manager

Coordinate contractors, schedules, budgets, and stakeholder communication on active construction projects.

Construction/Building Inspector

Inspect buildings and infrastructure at key stages to verify code compliance and structural integrity.

Landscape Supervisor

Oversee crews and manage the installation and maintenance of large-scale landscape projects.

With a Bachelor’s Degree or Higher2026-09-15T13:55:58-05:00

Four-year programs unlock the design and engineering side of the industry — careers that shape how communities look, function, and grow.

Architect

Design buildings and structures that balance function, safety, aesthetics, and building code requirements.

Civil Engineer

Plan and oversee infrastructure projects — roads, bridges, water systems, and site development.

Construction Manager

Lead major construction projects from groundbreaking through completion, managing teams, timelines, and budgets.

Landscape Architect

Design outdoor environments — parks, campuses, streetscapes, and green infrastructure — from concept through build.

Urban and Regional Planner

Shape how land is used and communities grow through zoning, policy, and long-range planning.

Mechanical Engineer

Design HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression, and other mechanical systems in buildings.

Electrical Engineer

Design power distribution, lighting, and electrical systems for commercial and industrial structures.

Safety Manager

Develop and enforce safety programs on construction sites, ensuring regulatory compliance and worker protection.

Facilities Manager

Oversee the ongoing maintenance, operations, and physical systems of commercial or institutional buildings.

Work-Based Learning & CTSOs

KTEC students don’t have to wait for graduation to start building a career. Paid work experience with local employers and hands-on trade competitions give them a real head start while they’re still in high school.

Youth Apprenticeship

The construction trades are built on learning by doing. Through Wisconsin’s Youth Apprenticeship program, Architecture and Construction students can earn paid, on-the-job experience with a regional employer while still in high school — working alongside tradespeople in real facilities, on real projects. YA hours count toward graduation requirements and often lead directly to continued employment or a formal trade apprenticeship after graduation.

SkillsUSA

Every KTEC pathway is anchored by SkillsUSA — a national career and technical student organization where students develop leadership, teamwork, and professional skills alongside their technical training. SkillsUSA members compete at local, state, and national levels in hands-on contests tied directly to their field.

Post-Secondary Options

Architecture and Construction graduates leave KTEC with credentials, college credit, and a clear sense of direction — whether they’re headed into the trades, a technical program, or a four-year degree.

1

Enter the Workforce

Enter the skilled trades directly. Many KTEC graduates move into apprenticeship programs or entry-level construction roles with contractors across Kenosha County and the greater Milwaukee region.

2

Continue at Gateway

Continue Gateway coursework toward programs in Construction Management, Electrical, HVAC, or related trades, with KTEC credits already applied.

3

Transfer to a 4-Year College

KTEC coursework and Gateway credits can support transfer into architecture, civil engineering, or construction management programs at Wisconsin universities.

Ready to start this pathway?

Enrollment at KTEC is open to all students in grades 4K–12. No application fee. No academic requirement. Open enrollment grades are 4K, Kindergarten, 6th grade, and High School — other grades have waitlists.
